If you are looking for that picture-perfect slice of Portugal’s wild Atlantic coast, Praia do Almograve is exactly where you want to head. Tucked away in the Odemira municipality along the Alentejo coast, it is widely considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the Southwest Alentejo and Vicentine Coast Natural Park.
Praia do Almograve – What’s the Beach like?
Praia do Almograve is roughly split into two beaches, both with their own distinct personalities. The Northern side, also known as Praia Grande is the wider, and deeper of the beach sections. It has two stairway access points, and is closer to the main car park. Naturally, this is the more popular of the two beaches, it is also closer to the only bar/restaurant in the area Bar da Praia do Almograve.

The southern section of the beach (although it has the same name) is a bit more remote than the northern section. It’s separated by a small rocky headland that is easy to walk around except for during high tide. This side of the beach is a calmer and more peaceful experience and perfect for people that want to get away from it all.

How to Get to Praia do Almograve
Getting to Praia do Almograve is straightforward if you have your own transport. If you are traveling by car from Lisbon or Faro, you will want to take the A2 highway and connect to the N120 or N393 toward Odemira, following the signs directly to the village of Almograve. From the village center, a single asphalted road (Rua do Mar) leads you straight to the oceanfront in under two minutes, where you will find a sizable, free paved parking lot right next to the beach access ramps.

How to Get to Praia do Almograve using Public Transport?
This is one of the wild beaches in the Alentejo you can almost access by public transport too. Rede Expressos, the national operator offer routes along this coastline offering stops in Sines, Porto Covo, Almograve, and Zambujeira do Mar, from Lisbon. Now it is much too far for a beach day trip, but this is a viable option if you intend to explore the coastline over several days, or hike along the Rota Vicentina. The Rede Expresso’s bus stop is 1km or a 15-ish minute walk to the beach from the village of Almograve.

Who should visit Praia do Almograve?
Praia do Almograve is one of my favourite stopping points when I’m travelling between Lisbon and the Algarve along the coast. With a car park, and quick access to the beach it’s a great shorter stopping point – you don’t need to commit to a full day here. You can stop for a short walk, a quick swim, or even a cold drink at the beach bar and take in those incredible views. As it’s a bit remote, it never feels too busy.
If you don’t want to commit to the full beach town experience of Vila Nova de Milfontes then it’s a great option. However, if you want to combine your beach trip with a town, a good selection of restaurants, bars, and shopping, then Vila Nova de Milfontes is a better option and is only 14km away!
