Zambujeira do Mar – Exploring the Coastal Alentejo, Portugal

Zambujeira do Mar is a small town on the Alentejo coastline, famous for its stunning views and great beaches. It’s a typically charming Portuguese seaside town with the usual features, great beaches, life guards during the summer, and of course great local food in a town that isn’t suffering from mass tourism.

Zambujeira do Mar is a pretty popular stopping point for people travelling from Lisbon to the Algarve, and vice versa. It’s full of cliffs, crags, and amazing viewpoints. During the warmer months, it’s beaches are pretty popular too!

Zambujeira do Mar is on the western coast of Portugal. It’s in the Alentejo region and one of the last towns you’ll come across if you’re heading south into the Algarve. It is roughly 2 and a half hours from Lisbon, or 1 hour from Lagos.

Perched at the cliff’s edge, and with one of the best views of coast is the iconic Chapel of Nossa Senhora do Mar. It’s much loved by locals, and it’s not uncommon to see events here.

The Fisherman’s Trail and Zambujeira do Mar

Zambujeira do Mar is also on the now famous Fisherman’s Trail of the Rota Vicentina, widely regarded as one of the best coastal walking routes in the world. The total length of the trail is over 226km. It’s possible to use Zambujeira do Mar as a base and walk in either the north or south direction to experience a shorted section of this stunning coastal route. For others, Zambujeira do Mar serves as a stopping point and rest stop, but there are many people that opt for shorter or one day hike!

Being futher south than Vila Nova de Milfontes, and the beautiful Porto Covo, in my opinion Zambujeira feels quieter and gets less traffic. Its more popular with walkers, and surfers than day trippers or people just here for the beach. As it’s a smaller town than Vila Nova de Milfontes, it also offers less facilities and is a little less family friendly.

Praia da Zambujeira do Mar

The main beach in Zambujeira do Mar is named after the town, Praia da Zambujeira do Mar. It’s a beautiful natural beach split into two, a narrower beach surrounded by cliffs, and a much more expansive beach backed by dunes. Both are accessible from the town; at low tide you can walk between the two beaches as well.

Festival Sudoeste – 2027

The biggest event for the town, and perhaps in this part of the Alentejo is Festival Sudoeste. 2024 saw around 100,000 people visit and international acts like Martin Garrix, Annita and Lil Yachty take to the stages. Unfortunately the festival was put on hiatus, but is set to return in 2024.

Is Zambujeira do Mar Worth Visiting?

Zambujeira do Mar is easy to recommend, it’s a charming Alentejo town in beautiful natural surroundings. The town itself is on the small side and mostly caters to day trippers, and people stopping as they travel between Lisbon and the Algarve. If you’re looking for a larger town for overnight stays or longer trips we usually recommend Vila Nova de Milfontes.
