While the Algarve is world-famous for its golden beaches and cliffs, exploring inland to its boutique vineyards reveals a different side to the region. The Algarve’s unique microclimate – with over 3,000 hours of sunshine a year but cooled by Atlantic breezes produces remarkable wines that you’ll rarely find outside of the domestic market.
Visiting local quintas or vineyards offers an unhurried alternative to the crowded coast, you will often find yourself chatting directly with the winemakers while sampling indigenous grape varieties like Negra Mole or Crato Branco. It’s an experience that’s great for not only wine connoisseurs, but also people that want a casual introduction to wine! What’s more, you may find something you genuinely enjoy, and bottles of local wine make great souvenirs and gifts!
The Algarve Wine Region
The Algarve Wine Region is the second smallest wine region in Portugal and currently has approximately 1,427 hectares of vineyards. The entirety of the Algarve Region is covered by a Protected Geographical Indication (IGP) which is known as the IG Algarve. In addition to this, and due to the unique micro-climates and terroirs there are four Designations of Origin (DOC’s or DOPs) inside this area. Those are Lagos, Portimão, Lagoa and Tavira.
To be labelled IG Algarve, at least 85% of the grapes must be from the Algarve, and the individual DOPs have much stricter requirements, such as specific types of grapes and specific quantities. For that reason, and to really get under the skin of the Algarve wine region you should be visiting or at least tasting DOCs wines from the Algarve.

Algarve Grapes to Explore
The grape to know is Negra Mole, which is described by the Algarve Wine Commission as the quintessential Algarvean variety, and it also happens to be one of Portugal’s oldest grape varieties. It is drought-resistant and deeply associated with the region’s sandy soils and old vineyards. For whites, look for Crato Branco, also known as Síria, as well as Arinto and other Portuguese varieties. These unique and very local varieties make up a lot of the estate’s vineyards.

The Best Wineries and Vineyards to Visit in The Algarve
Vinho’s do Algarve, the regional wine body, list 55 wine makers that produce either IG Algarve or a regional DOCs, which means there’s a wide choice of vineyards and estates to visit. Not all wineries operate tours or tastings though – so here’s my personal favourites!
