Visiting Óbidos is one of the top day trips from Lisbon – a historic village completely circled by walls. If you’re planning on visiting in Óbidos in December, you might be surprised to find snow here! Well once you get up close, you’ll find out its not quite real snow, but it looks convincing! Every December Óbidos turns into Óbidos Vila Natal and its fun for all the family.
Óbidos Vila Natal – What to Expect?
Each December, Óbidos completely transforms into Portugal’s biggest and most magical Chirstmas market – Óbidos Vila Natal. This Christmas village blends the historic charm of Óbidos, with family-friendly magic, creating an experience that feels both intimate and immersive.

The Christmas Village
Inside the walls, visitors can wander through twinkling streets filled with seasonal stalls, an ice rink, themed displays and even fun fair rides. There’s a typical Santa’s village for children, live performances, magic shows, and even themed areas inspired by fantasy worlds. There’s a wide range of food and drink, covering traditional festive treats, and international food too.
Adults can sip vinho quente (hot wine) or ginjinha – the region’s famous cherry liqueur, while browsing local crafts and festive treats. The setting itself, cobbled lanes, whitewashed houses, and the castle walls dusted with snow adds a fairy tale atmosphere, you simply won’t find anywhere else in Portugal.
What makes Óbidos so appealing is precisely its scale and commitment to Christmas. It’s festive but doesn’t feel overwhelming, offering a slower, more authentic Portuguese Christmas experience.

Óbidos Vila Natal vs. Óbidos?
Óbidos Vila Natal is held within the village of Óbidos, in a separate contained area. You will need a ticket to enter Óbidos Vila Natal, but you don’t need a ticket to enter the Óbidos. During the festivities, the entire village dresses up, decorations, Christmas lights, Christmas trees – there’s much more to see than just the Christmas Village. In fact, I highly recommend taking the time to explore the rest of Óbidos while you’re here!
When is Óbidos Vila Natal?
2026 dates have not yet been announced, we’ll update this post when they’re available! Typically, it’s from the last weekend of November until the first few days into January.
How to Get to Óbidos Christmas Village:
Getting to Óbidos is easy from Lisbon – you can drive there in about an hour via the A8 highway, or take the routine bus from Campo Grande, which runs regularly and drops you near the town entrance.
When to Visit?
The Christmas market occurs daily for over a month, so you can be flexible when to visit. Just bear in mind the weekends are much busier, and as Christmas approaches it gets busier with the school holidays too.
The Best Time to Visit Óbidos Vila Natal?
The best time to visit is mid week, during the afternoon. You’ll get to experience the whole village, activities, shows, and events, without it getting too crowded.
Do You Need a Ticket to Visit Óbidos Christmas Village?
Yes you do. Óbidos Vila Natal is in a separate gated area in front of the castle – with its own entrance. This area is where all the rides are, activities, and most of the food. To access this area you will need a paid ticket.
